Founded by 103 nationally prominent librarians in Philadelphia during the 1876 centennial anniversary of our nation’s birth, ALA initially adopted a non-controversial, reasonable goal: “To enable librarians to do their present work more easily and at less expense.” Today, 136 years later, ALA controls 62,000 members and, through its czarist accreditation program of many libraries, largely dictates what books are available for the most impressionable members of U.S. society, our children. For adults who utilize city and county libraries, ALA likewise exercises great influence over what may be read (and, in the Digital Audio/Video Age, what may be listened to and watched). So much for ALA’s love of “individual freedom” and “intellectual honesty.”
